Yes, you are using the garage for storage already, but the space is not being used efficiently and you can never find what you want. It seems to have become home for all types of sports equipment, tools, machines, and a collection of family stuff. The garage's original purpose for parking the cars and a small workout area seem to have been lost in the mess of it all.
If you were to use simple freestanding shelves, you can build it by just using planks, 1x1 strips and a screwdriver. The thickness of the plank is also essential and it depends on the items that you would like to put on it. If you use thin planks, shelves will simply bow under the weight that will be put upon it. For instance, if you are making bookshelves that are only about three to four feet wide, the right width of the plank must be at least 10 inches and its thickness must be 1 inch. If it's of for storing can foods and any food items, you can use 4-width with ¾ inches thickness plank.
Small adjustable shelves can be built between the studs and provide great storage space for small items such as jars, cans, bottles and for organizing and storing screws and nails. These storage spaces are built by attaching a series of 1x2 wood strips horizontally to the inside edges of two adjacent studs, approximately six inches apart. Also cut some 1x4 and 1x6 pieces of lumber, slip them on top of the 1x2 where they should fit between the studs very nicely.
Cut up the board of the shelf wherein the length will be the end its end width. This thing will be attached at the top ends of the vertical planks that form the top unit level. Lastly, cut the shelves that will span out the sides of the shelf and start it from the bottom, until you have reached the top. Every shelf must be positioned on their one by one supports and ensures that they are securely screwed into the place.
Sound familiar? Discouraging? Maybe, but it doesn't have to be. In fact, it is a prime opportunity to organize your storage so that everything is organized and easily accessible. This can be done by designing and installing new garage shelving.
