Storage shelves at times provide wonderful utility for homes. However, those commercial shelving units could not only be costly, but could also maximize the use of space. On the other hand, conventional storage shelf could not only be built in an economical way of doing, but also by taking advantage of every inch of the accessible space. So, since building your own shelf could be the most practical way to save your money while having a well-organized home, here are some of the guidelines that you can easily follow:
Hang brackets. Install the brackets that will hold up the shelving after the standards in place. If the brackets not adequately long to house the shelves, they can still be used. Simply mark the locations of the tips of the brackets against the bottom of shelving boards, and use a saw to make notches to accommodate the tips. Pay careful attention to the load rating of the brackets before using them to hold heavy items. Install shelves on brackets. The last step is to install the shelving on the brackets. Costly ready-made laminate or finished wood shelving is not necessary. Cheap wooden planks bought at your local home improvement store can be used instead. Consider having them cut to your particular specifications before buying, and remember that they can be decorated or painted as well in order to coordinate with any decor theme.
The final consideration when using prefabricated garage shelves, especially those designed for heavy loads is that you find some way to attach them to the wall, or create some other form of support that will prevent them from tipping and creating a danger to friends and family members. It is highly unlikely that you will have to acquire a building permit for this type of project, unless you decide to do any kind of plumbing or electrical wiring. When in doubt, be sure to check your city's building codes.
The most important part of a shelf is the large flat board that supports the items kept on it. If you are planning to keep your compact disks on it, then a six inch wide shelf should be good. For books, a nine to twelve inch width should be fine. However, if you are planning to put your clothes or reasonably large keepsake items on it, twelve inches should be sufficient, but it really depends on the size of the items. Whatever kind of shelf you are planning to use, the width should depend on the largest item or items it is going to hold.
Melamine boards cut to size will give your home that classy touch. They come in different colours; you will be able to match the boards with the rest of the furniture in the house. You can place them however you wish to achieve that unique style you need. If you are not too sure how to cut the melamine yourself then you can get a professional to do the job for you. They have the right material and they know just what to do to get you the kind of shelf you need.
