For most people creating your own shelves and furniture may seems like too daunting a task, and luckily now there are many items on the market that are created to capture the distressed, worn look. Think timeless elegance, make use of big solid items of furniture that already have that worn, distressed look. Pay particular attention to any hardware on the furniture, you should aim to have glass or vintage ceramic knobs which will look more authentic. You want pieces that have an inviting, warm feel to them, capturing the grace and style of a bygone era.
Locating the studs in the wall. Locating at minimum one wall stud will help to make your wall shelving safe and secure. Prior to installing shelving, use a basic magnetic or electronic stud finder to find the studs in the wall. Stud locators are sold in all price ranges, and even a cheap stud locator will be sufficient for the job.
If you were to use simple freestanding shelves, you can build it by just using planks, 1x1 strips and a screwdriver. The thickness of the plank is also essential and it depends on the items that you would like to put on it. If you use thin planks, shelves will simply bow under the weight that will be put upon it. For instance, if you are making bookshelves that are only about three to four feet wide, the right width of the plank must be at least 10 inches and its thickness must be 1 inch. If it's of for storing can foods and any food items, you can use 4-width with ¾ inches thickness plank.
If you are looking to reorganize your office or home, then wall shelves are the best option. You can store many different items such as files, books or CDs. If you want to give your bathroom a utilitarian look, then you can install an adjustable shelf to make the best use of the area. Wall shelves impart a clean look to your home décor and really clear the clutter.
Shelving or wall-mounted racks. These are all very popular choices. Shelves are more space efficient than wall-mounted racks, but the racks are more affordable. Cabinets, although costly are an excellent choice because they protect stored items from moisture and dust - and almost always require a contractor for installation. Stackable plastic containers placed on shelves are much less expensive and also have the advantage of providing visibility of the contents.
