If you were to use simple freestanding shelves, you can build it by just using planks, 1x1 strips and a screwdriver. The thickness of the plank is also essential and it depends on the items that you would like to put on it. If you use thin planks, shelves will simply bow under the weight that will be put upon it. For instance, if you are making bookshelves that are only about three to four feet wide, the right width of the plank must be at least 10 inches and its thickness must be 1 inch. If it's of for storing can foods and any food items, you can use 4-width with ¾ inches thickness plank.
Floor-supported garage shelving is another site-built option. One method for constructing these is to form upright supports by running vertical 2x4 boards every 50 inches. Each 2x4 should rest on the floor and be attached to a rafter or ceiling joist at the top. Then, additional 2x4 boards are attached horizontally on edge between the uprights and particle board is used to create the shelf. Dimensions are usually 19-25 inches deep with 25 inches between each shelf. These are only suggested dimensions and can be adjusted to better accommodate the size of the items that will be stored.
Once you have the bigger pieces of furniture, you will need to decide on your shabby chic shelves. Remember, the furniture and shelves do not have to match, you just need to make sure they are closely related in colour (usually whites, creams, or other pastels). You also need to choose the items that you place on them with great care to make sure that you truly capture the correct style. You should think about the colours and textures of the items. Make use of old battered recipe books, white china, old alarm clocks, victorian chamber pots, candle votives, early spice racks, sepia framed photos, imperial kitchen scales, and of course lots and lots of fresh flowers.
Whilst by no means a new look, shabby chic kitchens are now one of the most sought after kitchen styles, particularly in country or period properties. To create the perfect kitchen in this style, you will need to think about the walls and floors as well as the furniture, including such pieces as shabby chic shelves. Walls are generally best painted in white or off-white to maximise the amount of light. You could even try painting a pattern of wide pastel and white stripes. If wallpaper is more to your taste, a muted floral pattern will work best. Floor boards should be plain wood or painted white, or as an alternative you could make use of rustic tiles. If you can not stretch to replacing the flooring then simply add lots of kitchen mats or rugs in muted pink, blue, green, or floral designs.
You may dream about remodeling or completely renovating your garage; but, when you look at the budget, you know it is not going to happen. So, how to you get that extra storage space that you need so badly? Well the first step is to develop a good garage shelving plan.
